Course outline

What is the course about?

This course introduces you to digital video editing using a digital video camera and iMovie software. An equally invaluable introduction for those who want to go on to make documentary films, fine art films or to simply record family events.
You will be shooting on high quality cameras.

What topics will we cover?

- Shooting video using a digital video camera
- Editing digital movies in iMovie
- Adding sound
- Creating a QuickTime movie
- Burning media files onto DVD or CD.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

• Shoot footage using a digital video camera
• Capture and edit video using iMovie video editing software
• Export your sequence as a QuickTime movie (a portable file)
• Copy your project to other media – i.e., external hard drive or DVD.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is for beginners but you will be expected to have some basic knowledge of computers.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Each student will learn to use a digital video camera working in small groups or pairs. You will have your own computer and will edit your footage independently. Presentations will be made using computers, overhead screen and printed notes. Step-by-step instruction, with demonstrations where appropriate, will help you grasp the concepts.

The digital arts studio is equipped with industry-standard hardware and software. Apple Mac computers are used. You may wish to take our three-hour single session 'Introduction to using Apple computers' first if you are more used to the Windows operating system or want to increase your confidence in using Mac computers.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Books can be recommended but are not essential purchases. If you wish to store your work you should buy an external hard drive (at least 35GB) or DVDs.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre).
