Course outline

What is the course about?

You will learn how to design and execute successful cartoons for the market place. You will learn how to digitally enhance your images using colour, photo collage and effects. A slideshow of images will be created on DVD.

What topics will we cover?

Session 1: Exercises in: expressing emotion humourously; creating a single-image cartoon; creating captions and exploring the dynamic relationship between text and image.

Session 2: An examination of different published cartooning styles and the different contexts in which cartoons are used.

In the following sessions, we develop drawing techniques and styles in which we explore and experiment with posture, movement, expression, exageration and understatement. With an emphasis on the relationship between objects, people and environment, we create dynamic compositions.

Session 3: Introduction to scanning images and enhancing them using paint, layers and effects. Introduction to creating selections in Photoshop.

Session 4 and 5: Using photographic images as well as drawn images we learn how to
create surreal, witty collages. Introduction to cutting, pasting and modifying selections across different images. How to use tools and layers

Session 6: Creating a client-orientated slideshow on DVD.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- express emotion in cartoon drawing
- create dynamic compositions
- understand the role of text in creating captions
- scan images and manipulate them in Photoshop
- create a DVD showcasing your work
- create a series of cartoons which can add to your portfolio for gaining commissions.
