Learn to use selected camera settings to gain better control of your shoot. Find out about lens to aperture relationship, and the use of artificial and natural light for digital video. Some theoretical information on light will be covered.
How to best select camera settings for various light settings, when best to use artificial or natural light, how to set up the camera for best results.
- Set the camera to manual and select a setting relevant to your needs (e.g. daylight, artificial light etc)
- Use the camera’s pre-sets to negotiate certain light-conditions better (back-light/white-bablance)
- Understand the principles of a 2 way and 3 way lighting situation.
This is an introductory course.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.
Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.
Each exercise will be preceded with a demonstration. We will work in groups to practice certain settings and to use the equipment. Some individual tutorial support will be given. There will also be some group discussions.
Handbooks, manuals and worksheets are available.
You might also want to consider purchasing other books related to the subject of film making and editing. We will also provide you with a range of handouts and you can make use of books in the library.

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. You will also have some peer-review and be part of an overall culture of sharing feedback. A written report can be obtained on request.
