Course outline

What is the course about?

Learn to use selected camera settings to gain better control of your shoot. Find out about lens to aperture relationship, and the use of artificial and natural light for digital video. Some theoretical information on light will be covered.

What topics will we cover?

How to best select camera settings for various light settings, when best to use artificial or natural light, how to set up the camera for best results.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Set the camera to manual and select a setting relevant to your needs (e.g. daylight, artificial light etc)
- Use the camera’s pre-sets to negotiate certain light-conditions better (back-light/white-bablance)
- Understand the principles of a 2 way and 3 way lighting situation.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is an introductory course.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Each exercise will be preceded with a demonstration. We will work in groups to practice certain settings and to use the equipment. Some individual tutorial support will be given. There will also be some group discussions.
Handbooks, manuals and worksheets are available.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You might also want to consider purchasing other books related to the subject of film making and editing. We will also provide you with a range of handouts and you can make use of books in the library.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. You will also have some peer-review and be part of an overall culture of sharing feedback. A written report can be obtained on request.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses. Your views will always be welcome by the tutor.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre).
