Over the duration of the two day workshop, you will be introduced to the techniques of claymation and cut out animation and learn how to make short experimental films in each medium using a digital camera, Stopmotion capture and editing software.
The course is designed to introduce Stopmotion film making techniques. Over the 2 days of the workshop we will cover the following topics:
- Introduction to the history of Stopmotion animation
- Workshop on how to create Stopmotion films using digital camera and capture software
- Workshop experimenting with Claymation puppetry and cut out animation techniques
- Workshop on how to edit and export your own short animated film.
- Have an understanding of how to create your own Stopmotion animation film using a digital camera and capture software
- Have an understanding on how to create a simple claymation and/or cut out puppet
- Have an understanding of animation techniques
- Edit your final film and export as a Mov. File.
This is a beginner’s class. Students should be computer literate at a basic level. Please note that you will be using Apple Macs, not PCs, although all the software used on this course is cross platform. If you have never used a computer before, you might find our course ‘An introduction to Apple computers’ that run each term.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.
Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths.

Basic puppet making materials will be supplied but you are welcome to bring additional materials such as Plasticine, patterned papers, cardboard and cloth for creating your own individual puppet. You are encouraged to bring a notebook and pencils and pens for sketching ideas for puppets and background sets. All equipment for filming and editing in the class will be provided in our fully equipped Digital Arts studio.

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
