Over the duration of the course, you will be introduced to the techniques of claymation, puppetry and cut out animation and learn how to make short experimental films in each medium using a digital camera and Stopmotion capture software. Once you have an understanding of Stopmotion filmmaking techniques you will be guided through the processes of creating your own short animated film from storyboarding, puppet and set making to editing and exporting your final film.
The course is designed to introduce Stopmotion film making techniques. Over the five days of the workshop we will cover the following topics:
- Introduction to the history of Stopmotion animation
- Workshop on how to create Stopmotion films using digital camera and capture software
- Workshop experimenting with Claymation puppetry and cut out animation techniques
- Introduction to narrative design and storyboarding
- Creating your own puppets and sets in your chosen Stopmotion animation medium.
- Animating your own short film
- Editing and exporting your own short animated film.
- Have an understanding of how to create your own Stopmotion animation film using a digital camera and capture software
- Create your own claymation and/or cut out puppet using Plasticine or cardboard
- Plan and create a storyboard of your film
- Have an understanding of animation techniques
- Edit your final film and export as a Mov file.
This is a beginner’s class. Students should be computer literate at a basic level and have control of the functions of their cameras. Please note that you will be using Apple Macs, not PCs, although all the software used on this course is cross platform. If you have never used a computer before, you might find our course ‘An introduction to Apple computers’ that run each term.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.
Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths.
Through a structured programme of lectures, demonstrations, practical exercises and image based discussions. The photography studio uses a computer projector for presentations and viewing of images. Each student will have his or her own computer to work on.
Basic puppet making materials will be supplied but you are welcome to bring additional materials such as Plasticine, patterned papers, cardboard and cloth for creating your own individual puppet. You are encouraged to bring a notebook and pencils and pens for sketching ideas for puppets and background sets. All equipment for filming and editing in the class will be provided in our fully equipped Digital Arts studio.

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
