Course outline

What is the course about?

An introduction to the use of the sketchbook as a visual diary of your experiences, interests and visual experiments.
You will explore ways of recording and developing ideas in a purposeful way, and experimenting with composition within the context of a sketchbook. This will involve drawing and working in mixed media, using a variety of materials, including the option of photographic media. We will be working both in the studio and on location. You will be encouraged to discover and pursue your personal means of enquiry and self-expression.

What topics will we cover?

- How others have produced exploratory work and sketchbooks and why we use a sketchbook.
- Visual language - exploring the use of line, tone, texture, shape, form, colour and the implications of composition and the appropriateness of media.
- Working on location as well as in the studio.
- The generation of personal ideas within a chosen theme that may prompt development for further larger scale work, or continued sketchbook development.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Be willing to experiment with materials and techniques.
- Gather and record information in the studio and on location.
- Identify personal ideas to develop for continued sketchbook/large scale work.
- Understand the purpose and value of using a sketchbook.
- Demonstrate some ability for self-evaluation.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is designed both for those with basic drawing skills and more advanced students who wish to develop and enhance a personal means of enquiry and expression, through sketchbook work.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Examples of sketchbooks will be shown. Demonstrations of methods and techniques will be given. There will also be practical exercises, handouts, one-to-one discussion and tuition, informal group presentations and reviews.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Please bring an A4 hardback sketchbook and any drawing media you may have, including a camera if you want to use photographic media, to the first session. You will need a variety of materials, to be advised during the course.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

The sketchbook course is designed to help you explore and develop your own initiatives through drawing and mixed-media, and paves the way for further development in the visual arts, such as drawing, painting, textiles and 3D work.
