Course outline

What is the course about?

Using your sketchbook as a means to develop personal ideas and experiment with mixed media techniques and processes. This will involve drawing and working in mixed media using a variety of materials, including the option of photographic media. We will work with new ideas or those you have already which reflect your interests and experiences, and references to primary and secondary sources. You will be working in the studio and on location in the pursuit and development of an individual line of enquiry.

What topics will we cover?

- How others have used a sketchbook and why we use one.
- How we can research and collate appropriate media, materials and information both in the studio and on location, using a range of experimental approaches.
- The generation of personal ideas within a chosen theme, with a view to developing them further.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

• Understand how we may use sketchbooks for generating ideas
• Gather and record visual information in the studio and on location
• Use primary and secondary source material
• Experiment with materials and techniques
• Assess your own progress through discussion and reflection.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is designed for advanced students as well as beginners who like a challenge. All students would benefit from bringing along ideas and images of your own as a starting point.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Examples of sketchbooks will be shown, as well as other appropriate images and influences. Demonstrations of methods and techniques will be given as well as practical exercises and handouts. There will also be one-to-one discussion, tuition and informal group presentation and review.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Please bring a camera, sketchbooks and any drawing media you might have. You will need a variety of materials but will be advised during the course.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

This course is designed to help you explore and develop your own initiatives through drawing and mixed media and paves the way for further development in the visual arts.
