Course outline

What is the course about?

When the mind is relaxed and aware we can see more clearly and express what we see more directly. On this course you can discover how meditation techniques can help produce expressive figure drawings and increase your powers of observation. Working with a life model, these day-long figure drawing classes approach drawing skills from a creative and experimental viewpoint. The course emphasises expressive drawing over technical approaches, focusing on a variety of tasks and media to generate possibilities for developing your own visual language.

What topics will we cover?

There will be a short meditation at the beginning of each class to relax and focus the mind and help develop observational skills. This will be followed by warm-up and experimental drawing exercises (short poses), guided evaluation of drawings and then the chance to draw longer poses. There will be one-to-one tuition to help you engage with the drawing process and make decisions regarding media and technique.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

• Use mindful relaxation techniques to prepare for drawing
• Use a variety of approaches to drawing the figure
• Make decisions regarding different drawing media
• Develop a drawing from a sketch to a more finished study.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is suitable for enthusiastic beginners and those with some experience of drawing. There will be one-to-one guidance tailored to individual needs. The course is non-accredited. You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Through practical drawing tasks working with a life model. The class will include relaxation and mindful awareness exercises adapted for the drawing process from meditation techniques, followed by ‘warm-up’ drawing exercises. There will be opportunities to draw longer poses, during which there will be one-to-one guidance. There will be references to artists that you may wish to follow up. There will be opportunities for group discussion and sharing of individual drawing experiences.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You may wish to buy a sketch book and drawing materials book to practice drawing tasks outside of the class. There is a suggested booklist but it is not essential to buy these for the course. Basic drawing media and paper are provided.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre).
