Course outline

What is the course about?

You will develop your clothes making skills further and learn how to achieve a more professional finish through working on your own assignments. You will bring in your own project to work on which will entail using a commercial pattern. You will also be shown techniques that may be new to you which you can practise by making samples within the class.

What topics will we cover?

With individual use of a Bernina sewing machine, the tutor will guide you through advanced sewing techniques used in making up collars, pleats, frills etc.

You will also develop your skills, by practising on your personal clothing while using a commercial pattern. Topics you will become familiar with will include;
- Choosing patterns & fabrics for your projects.
- Laying up, cutting out and transferring pattern markings to the fabric.
- Following pattern instructions.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Use advanced sewing skills in dressmaking.
- Understand how to make collars, tucks, pleats, frills
- Press and finish articles.
- Produce a range of sewing samples for future reference.
- Demonstrate a better understanding of how clothes are made and the ability to follow a commercial pattern and understand terminology and processes followed.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is for learners who have some sewing skills and may have completed a basic and/or an intermediate dressmaking course such as Clothes Making Intensive 1 or 2, and who wish to advance their skills, use a commercial pattern & apply advanced procedures into their sewing.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able tomake basic measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Demonstrations, handouts, individual tuition, group discussion and practical work.
Work can be continued outside of the lesson. And homework can be given. Please note that you will be guided on patterns and work within the class but it would not be expected that you would complete a more advanced garment within the three week course.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Only basic materials will be supplied for samples, so bring in an ongoing project that you would like to work on, along with the commercial pattern, fabric and trims etc. as well as fabric scissors, tape measure etc.
*please note that when you go to buy a commercial pattern you must take your body measurements and buy accordingly which usually differs from your usual dress size.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre).
