Course outline

What is the course about?

This course is an introduction to colouring cloth. It will enable you to explore and develop ways of applying colour to cloth - developing skills in colour mixing, overlaying colours, combining colouring methods and testing different fabrics. You will work with dyes and pigments to colour cloth and develop your own designs to explore shape, mark and image using basic painting and print methods.

What topics will we cover?

You will develop a personal colour scheme and explore a range of colouring techniques including hand painting using Procion dyes and printing with pigments using blocks and screen printing. You will have the opportunity to create your own basic blocks and paper stencils for screen printing. You will explore colour through colour mixing and overlays and you will be encouraged to test a variety of types and weights of fabric.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

· Produce a personal colour scheme
· Demonstrate the use of colour mixing
· Employ dyes to colour cloth
· Make a basic stencil or block
· Use block printing to apply colour to cloth
· Colour cloth using screen printing and paper stencils
· Produce coloured fabrics employing a personal colour palette
· Employ basic shapes and marks to decorate cloth with colour.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is for beginners. It is an introductory course, suitable for those wanting to work with colouring cloth for a variety of applications such as embroidery and manipulated surfaces and is the starting point for a basic grounding in printed textiles.

The course complements Introduction to fabric printing VX123. If you have studied Introduction to fabric printing, this course will provide you with the opportunity to further develop your techniques, providing an opportunity to focus on colour, learn about dyes and hand painting techniques and explore how this can combine with pigment printing and silkscreen.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to make basic measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught through demonstrations, illustrations of artists’ works, samples of techniques, individual and group tuition and practical work. You will be asked to collect imagery and colours to develop your personal colour scheme and inform your samples.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will find it useful to have a sketchbook or file in which to collect your samples and a notebook to help you to record your discoveries. You will need to collect imagery and colours, which you find inspiring, and bring these with you to class.

Basic materials are provided but you will need to bring your own wider range of white natural fabrics such as linens or different weights of cottons.

Basic protective clothing (aprons, gloves, goggles) is provided but you may want to bring your own overall if required.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

This course complements Introduction to fabric printing VX123, which will provide you with the opportunity to further develop and refine your techniques, extend your knowledge of finishes using pigments, refine your design work and apply it to the printing of an article. Surface pattern: design and decoration VX114 also develops skills learnt on this course, with a focus on pattern and repeat you will learn to create your own repeat designs and use simple block printing methods to apply these to paper and fabric.
