Course outline

What is the course about?

Wished that you had the confidence to be a little bit more experimental with your work? Well this is could be an opportunity for you to create exciting and imaginative samples, which stretch and challenge you. Working from design sources, you will learn/ revisit a range of stitches and techniques, and be encouraged to break the rules to create a very individual and personal response to the set exercises.

What topics will we cover?

In each session you will be introduced to a range of different techniques and stitches for you to creatively interpret into samples. This will include stitches from the chain family, buttonhole, loop and knotted family. Working from simple design exercises you will look at different ways of using stitch to build up texture; consider pattern, colour work and use of expressive line. You will explore and experiment with unusual materials both to stitch with and on; plastics, metal, paper and wire. The aim will be for you to work on samples that can be used as to part of a portfolio or for personal development and enjoyment.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

All Students:
· Demonstrate an understanding of basic hand stitch techniques
· Build confidence it experimenting with a range of hand stitch techniques
· Identify and use a range of non traditional materials
· Create a range of hand embroidered samples
· Use the elements of design to inform your work

Students with some experience will also:
· Create a wide range of experimental and responsive hand embroidery samples
· Demonstrate development of current embroidery skills.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is suitable for all levels, beginners will be introduced to a range of basic hand stitch techniques and encouraged to use non traditional materials. More experienced students will have the opportunity to try out a wide range of experimental stitch techniques and build on current skills. An open mind and a willingness to explore are also desirable. Please be aware that the class will be made up of students of differing levels of experience.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be set practical exercises, which are supported by demonstrations, discussions, illustration and handouts. Tutorials will take place individually, with small groups and with the group as a whole. Extension exercises can be set if requested, to be completed at home.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to make basic measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Basic materials are provided and the tutor will bring a range of design imagery. However feel free to bring along any of your own images and unusual materials to stitch with, anything that you have collected over the years but never felt confident in using.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?
