If you have never made felt before, welcome to this versatile medium where you can explore this process to make exciting pieces of cloth. If you have, then learn this particular technique based on the felting process of fusing loose wool fibres with a sheer fabric such as silk or cotton gauze.
Beginners: prepare and blend coloured wool fibres for felting. Make samples of fine felt fabrics and more robust, heavier weight, textured felts - both using the ‘nuno’ technique.
Advanced: build upon your existing skills, and add another. Part of the first session of the course will be dedicated to working out an individual plan of learning to allow you to broaden your range of techniques and design your own project.
As a beginner:
- prepare and mix coloured wool fibres for felting
- make a light-weight nuno felt using wool fibres and sheer fabrics
- make a heavier-weight textured felt using wool fibres and sheer fabrics
As an advanced student:
- realise your own designs or develop a series of samples to inform future projects
- achieve a high standard of design and craftsmanship.
This course is for all levels. No experience of felt making is necessary. Beginners will learn the basics of this technique and produce a set of experimental samples.
For experienced felt makers, this course would be of interest for those who wish to learn the specific ‘Nuno’ technique and develop their design skills.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to make basic measurements and calculations.
Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.
The course will be hands on with demonstrations by the tutor, handouts, individual tuition and informal group discussions. The use of a sketchbook to record your thoughts and develop your work will be encouraged and basic research methods discussed. There will be recommendations for books and information on current exhibitions that you can visit in your own time. You will learn how to use tools, equipment, and materials safely in the workshop.
All wool fibres will be provided. A small amount of sheer silk and cotton fabric will be included but larger pieces of silk will need to be purchased on the course. Advice on appropriate fabrics will be given on the first day and students may wish to bring their own on the second day of the course.
You will need to bring a small towel and a water sprayer. You will also need a plastic bag to take home wet items.
No.
You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
