This course offers you an exciting introduction to the basic techniques of felt making, enabling you to experience this expressive, hands-on process. If you have some experience, you can explore techniques and ideas in more depth and pick up _ new skills and diverse ways of approaching the subject.
Basic felt making skills such as _ flat felting, mark making with wool fibres and textural effects, layering and cutting, felt balls and rope, and seamless pocket and flap techniques. More complex 3D hollow forms and moulding will be covered in a later course – Felt: developing techniques and ideas.
As a beginner:
- make small pieces of flat felt incorporating simple patterns and mark making
- create texture and imagery in the felt using a variety of techniques
- make felt balls and rope
- use a resist technique to create seamless pockets
As a student with some experience:
- reinforce your skills by producing a series of experimental samples to achieve a high standard of design and craftsmanship.
This course is designed for beginners but would also suit those with some knowledge wishing to refresh their skills.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.
Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.
The course will be hands on with demonstrations by the tutor, handouts, individual tuition and informal group discussions. There will be a slide presentation of traditional and contemporary examples of felt. The use of a sketchbook to record your thoughts and develop your work will be encouraged and basic research methods discussed. There will be recommendations for books and information on current exhibitions that you can visit in your own time. You will learn how to use tools, equipment, and materials safely in the workshop.

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
