Course outline

What is the course about?

Introduction to using the sewing machine.
Learning how to sew by machine.
Using tools and equipment in sewing
Developing sewing skills by creating samples with practical and decorative stitches.

What topics will we cover?

Individual use of a Bernina sewing machine will allow you to practice and build confidence in sewing. You will learn how to set up and thread the sewing machine and use various machine feet, tools and equipment in your sewing. You will learn how to sew practical and decorative stitches and simple appliqué. Also, troubleshooting and general maintenance.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Demonstrate competence in setting up and use of the sewing machine.
- Use the machine to create practical and decorative stitches
- Be competent in using tools and equipment
- Use different machine feet to make up samples
- Produce a range of sewing samples for future reference
- Be able to undertake basic machine maintenance.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

For beginners or those who wish to improve their basic sewing machine skills.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Through demonstrations, discussions, workshop practice, one to one instruction and guidance. Some tasks may
need to be undertaken at home in order to be completed.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Bring a notebook and pencil, tape measure, fabric scissors if you prefer. Basic materials are provided or can be purchased in class/ brought in.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

There are further courses in dressmaking and other courses in textiles in which you could learn how to embroider, knit or print, as techniques which could be used to embellish garments.
