Course outline

What is the course about?

Exploring and developing ideas through textiles and mixed media techniques within a themed project.
Producing samples, generating ideas and looking at making more resolved work over a three day course.

What topics will we cover?

In the first session you will think about various ways in which things change and disintegrate and work on some quick practical exercises that will explore the theme using various methods of treating, manipulating, joining and colouring papers. We will look at and discuss some textile artists that have worked with this concept.

For the last two sessions the aim is for you to identify an image that you are interested in working on and developing a textile piece from it using selected appropriate methods and techniques. In response to your individual projects, you will be shown ways of fragmenting, joining, fraying, cutting back and wearing away material, ways of adding colour, through the use of inks and other colouring agents, or obscuring with wax or layering of cloth and paper.

We will look at the impact of scale, colour, texture, composition, repetition and subject matter within the work.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

All students:
- Produce a textile piece or samples that express an aspect of your theme
- Select and experiment with suitable textile media
- Have some knowledge of artists that work with this theme.

Advanced students:
- Work with and select a variety of media appropriate to the successful completion of your theme
- Consider a variety of alternative treatments or constructions for your work either through sketchbook work or samples.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is for intermediate and advanced students. You need to have some experience of textile media to do this course, in particular you need to be able to use the sewing machine with confidence. An open mind to materials and how to work with them will be useful.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to make basic measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be supported by demonstrations, group discussion, illustration and individual tutorials.

The group will be given some practical exercises on the first day but following that, tuition will take place individually or with small groups combined with some group feedback sessions and practical demonstrations when needed.
You will need to do some work outside of the class. This will include selecting and collecting images and materials that will support your work in the last 2 sessions and taking time to reflect on your ideas.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Basic materials are covered in the fees. You will need to supplement this with other materials; fabrics, papers, threads etc to suit specific needs or preference and to provide variation.

You should have a sketchbook with you for every session and a folder of some sort to carry work home with you.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre).
