Course outline

What is the course about?

If you have no experience of making textiles but have always wanted to try it out, then this is for you.
It is a practical course where you will learn some basic techniques an understand some of the key elements of design.

This course will prepare you for lots of the other textile courses at City Lit.

What topics will we cover?

How to use a sewing machine for measured and free embroidery
How to use bondaweb and the heat press or iron for appliqué
We will look as some ways of using repeat shapes with colour, texture and line and how to use a view finder to select an interesting composition
You will work on both paper and fabric using fabric paint
We will also look at the work of some contemporary textile artists and makers.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Use a sewing machine for both measured and free stitching
- Use bondaweb for simple appliqué
- Use fabric paint to colour fabric and make textures
- Use a view finder to select composition
- Design using positive, negative and repeated shapes
- Understand the terms tone, line and texture within textiles.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Beginners.

You should be able to read English well as you will be analysing one text in-depth and have to work from both verbal and written briefs and have to verbally present your designs to the rest of the group. There will be handouts and some recommended reading that will accompany the course.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course will be very practical with demonstrations illustrated with samples .

Individual practical work will follow, supported by the tutor with additional demonstrations and help when needed.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

All materials will be provided by the college although you may wish to supplement this with some small pieces of fabric of your own choice for appliqué.

A notebook or sketchbook would be very useful for keeping your work and handouts in.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

We have lots of short courses in both the evening and day as well as longer courses available.
