Course outline

What is the course about?

You will learn how to make a Rex Setting from silver sheet and how to set stones into silver tube. Quick students will be able to turn both settings into finished pieces of jewellery. You can bring along two ring shanks to attach to the settings or you can just make pendants.

What topics will we cover?

- Rex Setting
- Tube Setting.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- make a rex setting
- set stones into tube
- have a finished piece of jewellery with a set stone.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is designed for students who are confident in basic jewellery making skills, such as soldering and filing. Not suitable for beginners or students with very little experience in jewellery making.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught through demonstrations and photographic examples of jewellery that show how the above skills are developed. Support and advice by the tutor will be given throughout the whole course. It won’t be necessary to do any work outside the class.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

City Lit provides most of the basic tools and equipment you will need for jewellery making.

However, all precious metals, stones, and other materials you need for your specific projects must be provided by you.

You will need to buy the following items for this course:
- silver sheet, 1mm thick, 4x2cm big
- 1 round facetted stone, 10mm in diameter
- at least 1 round stone, 3 or 4mm in diameter + 3cm silver tube (chenier), for 3mm stones outside diameter 3.5mm and for 4mm stones outside diameter 4.5
- sawblades (2/0)
- emery paper

The cost will be around £15 depending on your choice of stones.

We would also recommend you to bring your own needle files if possible.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre).
