Course outline

What is the course about?

This course will give you the basic knowledge to create fantastic surfaces with transparent and opaque enamel and with silver foil.

What topics will we cover?

-How to prepare everything for enamelling
-How to use enamel equipment and tools (oven and enamel colours)
-How to develop your own enamel surfaces collection
-How to find out different qualities and possibilities.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Understand the process of enamelling with opaque, transparent enamel
- See the different qualities and possibilities of the technique
- Use tools and equipment safely
- Have a small collection of different enamel surfaces
- Work to a simple design
- Finish at least one enamelled “brilliant surface“ piece.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

To enjoy working with your hands. Metal jewellery making skills would be a benefit, but are not necessary.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The tutor will show examples, and will demonstrate step-by-step how to work with the traditional enamel/ cloisonné technique. This is a very hands on course – you will learn by following the demonstrated processes. There will be on-going individual practical tutorials.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Costs are: Copper, enamel colours, seive, pestle+mortar and a brush, silver foil.

Please bring a notebook, coloured pencil and scissors. All tools are provided but please feel free to bring your own plier, tweezers, hammer, saw and files.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
