Course outline

What is the course about?

The course is designed for those who have no previous experience of working with metal or the tools and skills necessary for the making of jewellery. The course will begin with an introduction to the safe use of tools and equipment, then the making of a ring. Ring making will serve as an introduction to the processes of measuring, sawing, joining, texturing, basic forming, and finishing and polishing.

What topics will we cover?

An introduction to cutting, annealing, some texturing options, and how metal may be formed and soldered together. Using these skills you will make a simple ring in silver.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Cut and form metal
- Anneal and solder metal
- Texture metal using various methods
- Design and make a ring implementing various techniques
- Have an understanding of basic jewellery-making, including the health and safety issues.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is for beginners and improvers who prefer to take a shorter course, or for those who want an introduction to this subject area.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Through demonstration, advice and guidance, photographic examples of jewellery and technical notes, as appropriate.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

General tools and equipment will be supplied. Enough base metal for experimentation and silver to make one ring will be included in the course fee. If you wish to make more than one ring or embark upon further projects, you will need to supply additional materials. You are expected to supply your own sketchbooks and drawing materials.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?
