This unconventional course aims to improve your jewellery making skills by asking you to follow a series of 3 challenging projects. These projects can be combined to create a single item of jewellery but your tutors will not let you progress until you get it absolutely right, just as if you were an apprentice in the jewellery trade. By letting you acquire the eye for, and the patience required to work with greater precision, this course aims to help you to gain the ability to realise your design to a professional standard.
The class will meet at City Lit on 4 consecutive Sundays per term but you will be expected to carry on working in between these blocks of sessions in order to complete the projects. Since the maximum number of students is set at 12, you will receive more individual attention from your tutors than in a mainstream class where the numbers are set at 16.
- box catch/ side snapper
- hinges and hinge-cross
- how to make hollow forms
- finishing jewellery to a high standard.
By the end of the course you should have made a bracelet consisting of hollow forms joined by hinges fastening with a standard box catch or side snapper.
- Work out a detailed plan for the construction of jewellery piece(s).
- Precisely measure and mark metal
- Cut out and file to required measurements
- Make a tube, then use it to construct a hinge
- Apply appropriate type and level of finish.
The course is designed for students who have been making jewellery for years with a high level of skills. It is not suitable for beginners or students with very little experience in jewellery making. You are advised ask your current tutor for advice before enrolling or make an appointment for an informal interview with the visual arts office.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, handouts and for health and safety information, and will be able to take part in group discussions. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.
Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.
You will be taught through demonstrations and photographic examples of jewellery that show how the above skills are developed. Support and advice by the tutor will be given throughout the whole course. You will also be expected to do some work outside the class, such as designing, and, if necessary, making test pieces or finishing parts of your bracelet.
City Lit provides most of the basic tools and equipment you will need for jewellery making.
However, all precious metals, stones, and other materials you might want to use must be provided by you. You will also have to bring your own saw blades, drill bits and emery paper.
The tutors will help you putting a list of materials together at the beginning of the course.

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
