Exploring ways of developing ideas, perfecting ongoing skills, learning different techniques and creating or continuing a sketchbook to record your development and ideas on your own initiative.
This course is for those with an extensive knowledge of the techniques of jewellery and silversmithing. Because of the nature of the 'Structured jewellery year 3' course on which tutors from other disciplines will also be teaching, you should to be proficient enough to be able to work independently.
- describe and implement health and safety issues related to activity in the workshop.
- use machinery and hand tools accurately and with confidence.
- exploit the working properties of metal and use other materials to your own advantage.
- use a few of the more advanced jewellery-making techniques.
- take away a collection of jewellery of your own design and manufacture, presentable as a portfolio.
For those with a fundamental knowledge of the techniques in jewellery and silversmithing.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.
Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.
Support and advice as requested.
City Lit provides almost all the basic tools and equipment you will need for jewellery-making. We also provide basic materials in reasonable quantities, such as base metals (copper, gilding metal, etc.) and other materials (paper, enamel, etc.,) chemicals (pickle, borax, etc.,) and sundries (etching resist, polishing compound, etc.)
You will need to buy some items yourself, such as saw blades, all precious metals (silver, gold, etc.) and stones. You will also need a sketchbook for your design work and to write notes on exhibitions or any other relevant information.
As you gain experience you might want to invest in your own tools.
