Course outline

What is the course about?

Polymer clay is a relatively new and dynamic material. The course explores its incredible potential for creating wearable art using simple tools that can be found at home. It is a beautiful and economic way to bring colour into other areas of traditional crafts.

What topics will we cover?

We will cover using tools and workspace, different brands on the market, conditioning polymer clay, creating simple and complex canes, surface techniques (i.e. image transfer, gold and silver leaf) skinner blends, different bead shapes and adding finishing touches.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- confidently use the tools and equipment for polymer clay
- create a range of simple and complex canes
- create a variety of beads of different sizes and shapes
- create a ‘swatch’ board showing a variety of surface designs and modelling techniques to explore and develop at a later stage
- produce at least 2 pieces of finished wearable pieces i.e. earrings, brooch or bracelet
- know where to go for more information.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is for you if you are new to the material and also if you come with some prior experience of jewellery making. If you have a background or interest in other crafts such as fibre arts, glass, jewellery or beading, you will also find lots of ‘cross-over’ possibilities using polymer clay.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught using a combination of demonstrations, hands on tuition, access to books and magazines, examples of work, handouts and DVD presentation. (There is no set work outside the class).

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Basic materials and tools are provided including polymer clay. A list of optional materials will be sent prior to the course.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
