Learning to work more independently on your own projects in a safe environment. Perfecting ongoing skills, discovering different techniques to try out, and perhaps looking at new ways of approaching design and making by stepping out of your comfort zone with the tutor’s gentle nudging.
You should bring to class some ideas of what you would like to make. In discussion with the tutor you will realise these plans at your own pace. Please be aware that there will be no class-wide projects.
- understand the working properties of metal and other materials
- know a range of techniques used in the making of pieces
- use a range of hand tools and types of machinery with confidence
- know and implement good health and safety practice in the workshop.
You should be able to perform, without the tutor's help, basic jewellery-making skills such as piercing, filing, drilling, annealing, soldering, bending and forming. You should be familiar with properties of commonly used metals in jewellery, and be aware of basic health and safety issues in the studio.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations and hand-outs, and health and safety information. It will be beneficial if you can take part in informal group discussions.
You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations, and recognise and draw simple geometric shapes.
Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.
In a well equipped workshop setting, through demonstrations and photographic examples of jewellery that show how the above skills are developed. Individual support and advice will be given to extend your abilities.
City Lit provides almost all the basic tools and equipment you will need for jewellery-making. We also provide basic materials in reasonable quantities, such as base metals (copper, gilding metal, etc.) and other materials (paper, enamel, etc.,) chemicals (pickle, borax, etc.,) and sundries (etching resist, polishing compound, etc.).
There will be some items you need to buy on your own, such as saw blades, all precious metals (silver, gold, etc.) and stones. You will also need a sketchbook for your design work and to write notes on exhibitions or any other relevant information. As you gain experience you might want to invest in your own tools.
No.
You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Your tutor will advise you.
