Course outline

What is the course about?

This City & Guilds course, 36 sessions long, takes place one day per week over a year. It is a structured course which aims to consolidate your learning from the previous courses in the design and manufacture of jewellery. You will be expected to develop your skills further in research, planning, and observation, as well as make more technically demanding items.

You will be awarded the City & Guilds level 3 Certificate by successfully completing this course.

What topics will we cover?

Design Principles:
There will be a series of short projects based on the design principles of harmony, balance, rhythm, contrast, and scale and proportion.

Technical Input:
Various techniques useful in accomplishing the two making projects will be surveyed, as well as the use of non-precious materials.

Jewellery Projects:
There will be two 12-week long projects, to comply with the City & Guilds requirements. They are:
1. Fretwork Brooch
2. An Unusual Setting.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- present a jewellery design to a customer by means of a drawing
- understand the processes of abstraction and simplification
- describe and create sample images showing different design principles
- design and make a brooch mechanism
- set unconventional materials into metal in innovative ways
- make pieces of jewellery with a high standard of precision and care.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You should ideally have finished City & Guilds 7112 / 7922 or equivalent successfully, or have a solid fundamental knowledge of jewellery-making and design.

You should be able to follow written and verbal instructions, demonstrations and hand-outs, and health and safety information. You will be invited to take part in group discussions and critique sessions, where it is essential for you to be able to communicate with your fellow classmates. For your coursework you will be asked to carry out simple research activities: this means that you need to be able to select and use different texts to obtain information, read and summarise them, digest the meaning of them to form an informed opinion, then express these.

You will need to be able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide numbers and will be asked to recognise and draw geometric shapes and find the area, perimeter and volume of them, use simple formulae for example converting imperial to metric measurements, and read tables, graphs and diagrams.

You will need to be able to find information from websites, and should be aware that a lot of communication between the tutors and the student group will take place via e-mails.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you might benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class. Please contact the 'Skills for life' team on 020 7492 2511 for more information.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

City Lit provides most of the tools and equipment you will need for basic jewellery-making.

City Lit will also provide basic materials in reasonable quantities, such as base metals (copper, gilding metal, etc.) and other materials (paper, enamel, etc.,) chemicals (pickle, borax, etc.,) and consumables (etching resist, polishing compound, etc.).

Should you wish to work with precious metals and precious- and semi-precious stones, you need to supply them yourself.

You will also need to bring in all sundry items such as saw blades, drill bits, abrasive papers, polishing mops, sketchbooks, notebooks, pens and pencils, and a series of folders. You will also need to cover any entrance fees to exhibitions, fairs or other events.

You may choose to buy and bring in your own basic tools to use during the course; advice and guidance will be given when appropriate.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. The tutors will look at your practical work, sketchbooks and folders on a regular, ongoing basis. There will be individual tutorials at the end of every project, as necessary. At the end of the course, a certificate will be awarded to everyone completing it successfully. There will also be an exhibition of work made on the course at the end.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses. Student representatives can also express the students' views at board of studies meetings. Karola and Masako will also appreciate you sharing your views and making suggestions on an informal basis at any time.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?
