Course outline

What is the course about?

'Try jewellery' is designed as an introduction to the City & Guilds Jewellery 7822 course (which allows you to gain an initial qualification in jewellery-making), but as basic skills are covered you will find it a good general taster course for beginners.

What topics will we cover?

You will learn the basics of jewellery-making, such as cutting, polishing, soldering and annealing, and have a chance to design and make an arm piece of your choice, with tutor guidance.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- cut metal with a saw
- drill holes in metal
- polish metal
- anneal and solder metal
- design and make an arm piece.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is designed for beginners or those with a very basic knowledge of jewellery-making.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class. Please contact the “Skills for learning and life” team on 020 7492 2511 for more information.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Through demonstrations backed up with handouts, group activity and production of test pieces followed by a final piece.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

City Lit provides almost all the basic tools and equipment you will need for jewellery-making. We also provide basic materials in reasonable quantities, such as base metals (copper, gilding metal, etc.) and other materials (paper, enamel, etc.,) chemicals (pickle, borax, etc.,) and sundries (etching resist, polishing compound, etc.).

You will need to buy some items yourself, such as sketchbooks, saw blades and all precious metals (silver, gold, etc.) and stones. There will be a handout detailing the list of items and where to buy them. You should be prepared to spend about £10 on sundries, plus £10 - £20 should you wish to use silver. (The cost of silver is fluctuating at the moment and so this is an estimate based on prices at the time of writing - June 09.)

As you gain experience you might want to invest in your own tools.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions. *PLEASE NOTE: All interviews have taken place and all spaces have been offered.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

You could move onto the City & Guilds Jewellery 7822 course, or to a non-accredited day or evening class. There are many to choose from, and your tutor can advise you.
