More mosaics: direct method

For all levels, this course uses the indirect and double indirect methods, which involve fixing your mosaic onto a temporary base before transferring it into a surface, or casting it into concrete. Course outline

What is the course about?

Developing creative and practical skills in making mosaics using the direct, indirect and double indirect methods, and considering the appropriate use of these various techniques. Developing a visual sensitivity with regard to the tactile values and surface texture associated with the mosaic medium, and the possible development of relief work in the direct method. The course focuses on a greater proficiency in the use of mosaic materials and tools.

What topics will we cover?

The course will allow for each student to work on a personal project using the direct, indirect, or double method. The processes will involve preparing designs based on your own ideas and source materials, and developing the work in the appropriate method of choice. Emphasis will be placed on technique for further development and on the exploration of textural and surface quality.

Application onto non-flat surfaces will be possible - bases for this may be brought in or made out of concrete in the class (dimensions limited). Processes for larger projects outside of the classroom, such as mosaics murals, will be outlined. We will also explore the contemporary significance of materials, processes and their related traditions.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- complete mosaics independently using the direct, indirect or double indirect method
- explore a range of pictoral devices in the mosaic medium
- self-appraise and critique your own work
- process visual material and generate ideas for further projects.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is ideal for people who have had some experience in making mosaics. However, beginners are also welcome.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Demonstrations, practical work on individual projects, informal group discussions, slides and books, individual tuition and other student projects.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

A selection of books on mosaics will be at your disposal during the course. A materials allowance is included in the course fee which will cover most of what is required. If you would like to use smalti glass or materials not available on the course, please bring your own. You may want to decide this after the first session.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

You are welcome to join mosaics courses again for an opportunity to experiment and develop your skills further, and to build up confidence to take on site-specific projects. If you do not work in other media, you are encouraged to develop your drawing skills for a broader understanding of visual language.
