Course outline

What is the course about?

The course meshes fine art, graphic design and architecture and considers the depiction of the city in ‘mapped’ forms by artists, designers and architects; equipping you to produce your own work.

What topics will we cover?

Creative mapping is the depiction of spatial environments/information within the city using unconventional forms. ‘Mapping’ is interpreted loosely to encompass narrative as well as space, and is also considered at different scales, from room to city. It will include the depiction of histories (time) as well as space.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

• Understand the concept of creative mapping as a technique for depicting space, time and narratives
• Appreciate some of the richness, range and diversity of spaces in and around the city
• Use new and existing skills and techniques to explore and document the above
• Develop works expressing an individual response to the city
• Develop confidence and excitement for further creative projects.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You do not need any particular skills to undertake this course. You should be comfortable with working/walking outside to gather the information and ideas for your own work.

An open mind and willingness to treat the workshops as a group learning activity would be helpful. A broad range of students are welcome and it is the coming together of a variety of skills and interests which will help this course to develop. Particular skills such as photography and drawing are welcome but not a prerequisite. You do need an interest in visual arts/design and/or architecture.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Talks, practical work, individual tutoring, group discussion.

The course will be delivered through various methods which aim to draw out and develop your personal interests whilst at the same time introducing ideas and activities. Participation will involve walking in the city and spending time outside, considering spaces/places and ways of gathering data for your own projects.

Brief seminars will cover examples designed to inspire you by contemporary and past practitioners. We will consider city spaces at various scales: from the intimate domestic or social, to the broader urban landscape.

Practical workshops will introduce you to techniques of using gathered data/inspiration. You will be aided to creatively realise your own city/spatial depictions.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Basic materials will be provided but you will need to bring a notebook and pens/pencils. Please feel free to bring cameras and drawing equipment you might ordinarily use.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students
