A lecture in colour theory will be followed by a series of exercises designed to expand awareness of colour use and mixing. A variety of paints and materials will be explored with a particular focus on mixing with oil paint. Suitable for all levels. Basic materials included.

Course outline

What is the course about?

To introduce colour theory and how to apply it in practice.
To improve your skills in colour mixing with oil paint.

What topics will we cover?

- colour theory.
- relating theory to practice for painters.
- mixing colour for painters.
- developing skills in mixing observed colour.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- understand colour theory and the science of seeing
- relate colour theory to painting
- mix oil paint
- take away a painted colour swatch chart to use for future reference
- present a small painting based on observed colour mixing.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Suitable for beginners and intermediate levels working in oils and acrylics only.
Not suitable for people wishing to work in watercolour

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

- Slide lecture at 10.30 am on the first session (please do not be late).
- Colour mixing exercises
- Individual tuition, dependent on each student's level.
- Group discussions.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

All materials will be provided, but if you have a metal flat palette knife they would be easier to manipulate than our plastic knives.
Please bring lots of cotton rags (old bedding or tshirts) or kitchen rolls (no jay cloths, nylon or crimplene).
Please wear old clothes or overalls as you might get paint on your clothes.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
