Course outline

What is the course about?

The course is about basic drawing, painting, sculpture, collage and printing techniques. We will explore a number of visual concepts through observation, expression and theory, and you will gain confidence in visual expression. You will also gain an understanding of visual concepts and approaches.

What topics will we cover?

Observational drawing skills – learning to look – line, tone, texture, positive and negative shape, composition. Mixing and matching paint – basic colour theory. Using collage to analyse composition of a painting. Painting from observation. Using drawing and painting materials to discover a personal visual expression. Introduction to printmaking processes: monotype, drypoint and linocut. Introduction to working in three dimensions: clay modelling and simple plaster casting.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- have basic skills in drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture and collage
- have an understanding of visual concepts, basic techniques and approaches
- express an observation or idea with confidence
- recognise your own abilities and may feel a degree of commitment to subjects within the visual arts area.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is designed for those with very little or no experience of the visual arts. You may have the hidden desire to encounter the possibilities of being able to express yourself visually.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Learning methods: practical, theoretical, empirical.
Teaching methods: introductory lectures, project briefs, demonstration, comments and group discussions.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

All materials are provided.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
