Course outline

What is the course about?

Term 3:
We will be encouraging an individual approach, with the aim of developing your confidence to realise work for an exhibition. You will evolve an individual visual theme from observation and/or abstraction, with an emphasis on the personal use of colour, shape and space in an image.

The Radiant Image is a unique set of linked courses that serves as an ideal follow-on from shorter courses. The study of luminosity in painting is approached through structured and /or individual projects. You can attend for the year, or one term, to build up innovative, less traditional, skills in water-based painting.

What topics will we cover?

This term, one core group project will form the basis for individual study that will be developed through challenges and support from the tutor.

You will develop your painting through the imaginative interaction of subject, medium and chance. Towards the end of the term there may be an opportunity to mount an exhibition of your work in the corridor at City Lit.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

• explore your aesthetic response to process and the technical aspects of working with transparent and opaque media
• realise a visual theme/form from observation and/or abstraction.
• have the confidence to bring work to a stage of completion ready for exhibition
• work with independence and some individuality
• explore qualities of transparency through paint processes.

New learners, please see Radiant Image 1, course VM594.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is a course for anyone with a bold spirit and/or a basic knowledge of watercolour, drawing or painting.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Through practical projects, individual guidance and encouragement, group discussion and, when appropriate, the use of reproductions of artworks as added example/stimulus. Plus some visual research off-site in a gallery/museum or outside.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

A supply of basic drawing materials and paper is provided throughout the year. Watercolour is provided for the first two weeks, and thereafter you will need to provide your own. Recommended colours will be discussed at the first meeting.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

This course is designed to complement and extend ideas and themes that may be encountered on a wide variety of other courses throughout the visual arts programme.
