This two-day practical course introduces you to basic etching processes. You will progressively accumulate hard and soft ground techniques, aquatint and sugar-lift onto a zinc plate and make final prints in both monochrome and colour.

The course is an introduction to the basic processes and principles of etching.
You will develop an image using basic etching processes to create line, texture and tone by using hard and soft ground, aquatint and sugar-lift techniques. You will have practical experience of the equipment and materials associated with etching, and emphasis will be placed on using the printroom safely and effectively.
- Apply etching proicesses to create drawn marks in a zinc plate
- Add tone to your image using aquatint
- Add brush-marks to your etching by using sugar-lift techniques
- Prepare paper and dry prints
- Print your image in the intaglio method
- Make prints in monochrome and colour
- Use the print room tools and equipment safely and effectively.
The course is suitable for complete beginners and those with some drawing or printmaking experience.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussions. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

There ill be demonstrations, talks and looking at examples followed by practical application of the processes. You will develop an etched imageby progressively layering the processes.
Materials are provided, however, if you wish to use a specialist paper to print on you can purchase this in the class at cost price. Please bring to sketches, photographs or ideas as a starting point for your etching to the first session.

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
