Course outline

What is the course about?

To try out the basic printmaking methods and materials and to learn about a broad range of printmaking techniques through practical experience and experimentation. You will be able to develop your ideas from personal sources and projects.

What topics will we cover?

If you are a beginner, you will learn the basic techniques, working with a variety of print media.

Intermediate and advanced learners are encouraged to build on previous experience, as well as continuing with experimentation, and will be introduced to more advanced techniques such as photo etching and multiplate printing.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

For beginners:
- etch on metal using a variety of processes
- prepare and use lino and card as printing blocks for relief and intaglio
- prepare paper for printing
- print blocks and plates to good standards in monochrome and colour.

For intermediate and advanced learners:
- explore personal imagery through various printmaking processes
- engage in advanced technical processes
- develop the content of your work further.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is suitable for beginners, intermediate and advanced learners. You should be able to follow verbal and written instructions in English for both health and safety purposes and to enable you to follow printmaking procedures. You should be able to take short written notes for your own use and occasionally make simple measurements using a ruler. Basic drawing skills would be an advantage.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Demonstrations and personal application of different aspects of the media will be offered as you advance in knowledge and competence. Beginners will make test plates of all the procedures as a prelude to developing their own ideas and imagery.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

The course fee covers some basic materials such as inks, acids and white spirit. All papers and plate can be purchased at cost in the class. Please bring rags for cleaning. Please bring sketches, photographs or other visual resources as a starting point to the first session.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

You could go on to study the subject at more advanced levels on full or part-time courses, or may be encouraged to strengthen your skills in other areas, particularly in drawing, via many courses at City Lit.
