Course outline

What is the course about?

Wood lends itself exceptionally well to portraying mass, both solid and tonal and to the use of strong line. The emphasis throughout this course is on avoiding complexity and utilising simple block-cutting methods such as a ‘white line cut’ to produce areas of rich blacks, cut marks and impressed lines in your woodcut prints providing you with the basic knowledge from which to develop your own style.

What topics will we cover?

We will look at how to place your image on to the block. We will discuss inks and papers most suitable for printing relief blocks. Cutting and developing a block through proofing as part of the cutting process. Printing by hand as a way to reveal nuances of line and tonality. We will reference woodcut prints from modern art such as the German Expressionist Art movement and Japanese artist Shiko Munakata.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

• Prepare source imagery ready for transfer to a woodblock
• Identify the basic tools used for cutting woodblock
• Cut an image that utilises cutting line, tone/pattern for woodcut relief printing
• Prepare ink for relief printing
• Print a woodblock by hand burnishing
• Use a relief press to print a woodblock.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
