Course outline

What is the course about?

The course is about developing skills in seeing and understanding three dimensional form from the life figure.

What topics will we cover?

There will be 2 or 3 sets of poses: short and long, during the course.
You will be encouraged to draw and modelling will be done in terracotta clay, using a range of techniques. You will work from small to larger scale. You will then have the opportunity to introduce at least one other material such as plaster and wax.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Draw from the model
- Produce at least one sculpture using accurate measuring skills
- Manipulate clay using a range of techniques and prepare it for firing
- Understand the proportion, space and form of the model
- Experiment with materials
- Experiment with scale
- Challenge yourself creatively from the example of other artists’ works and by your own practice.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Ideal for more experienced modellers but beginners welcome.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Life modelling with be taught mainly on an individual basis, with group discussions on major topics concerned with sculptural studies from life. The emphasis will be on practice with guidance.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Materials are provided by City Lit but you would be advised to buy one or two modelling tools.
The suggested tools are B range from Tiranti , B6 or 104-020 and B8 or 104-040. These are available in the London shop at 27 Warren Street , London W1 (Tel: 020 7636 8565) or by mail order from the Reading branch: 70 High Street, Theale, Reading, Berks RG7 5AR (Tel: 01189 302775).

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
