Course outline

What is the course about?

Make a Tussauds-style waxwork from a life cast of your own head. Learn to recreate in detail the colour and texture of the head and face, including hair, lashes and eyebrows.

What topics will we cover?

You will make a life cast of another student's head using plaster bandage, and will have your own head cast by another student in turn. (Please note that this involves having your head and face completely covered with plaster). You will learn how to pigment and layer wax to mimic real flesh and make a wax cast of yourself from your plaster mould. Finally, you will learn how to finish the cast, adding colour and detail, and sewing in eyebrows, lashes and hair, to achieve a lifelike finish.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

• Take casts from the human body
• Accurately pigment and layer wax to replicate flesh tones
• Make wax casts
• Use a range of finishing techniques to create life-like details, including hair.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is suitable for beginners as well as those with some experience of working in sculpture.

Support is available if you think you would benefit from help with following written or verbal instructions in English or with working independently. Please contact the 'Skills for learning and life' team on 020 7492 2511 for more information.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

This is very much a hands-on course. You will be taught by demonstration and your tutor will be on hand throughout to provide help and guidance.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

All basic materials including plaster bandage, wax, pigments and tools will be provided. You may wish to purchase some extra materials yourself for the finishing stage of the project, such as hair and oil paints, although a selection will be available. You will also be asked to bring some items with you such as a swimming hat to wear when having your cast taken and an old saucepan for melting wax.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students

When I've finished, what course can I do next?
