Course outline

What is the course about?

Investigate abstract and/or figurative carving using Styrofoam, which you can use to make in a day what would take a week to carve in stone. Learn about different ways of modifying the raw surface of your sculpture which you could carry out at home after the course.

Styrofoam is a little like polystyrene, but much less messy to carve. The material is light, strong and easy to work.

What topics will we cover?

Techniques of working the material will be demonstrated. You will then experiment with making work which can be abstract or figurative. There will be a slide show of other artists’ work to inspire you. The work will be small in scale.

Industrial techniques that use this material will be illustrated in a slide show.

Techniques that alter the surface of the raw surface of a Styrofoam sculpture will be discussed.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- carve Styrofoam to create a sculpture
- understand how to modify the surface of a Styrofoam sculpture
- understand the health and safety aspects of using the materials and techniques covered on the course.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Beginners and people with experience are equally welcome.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught as a whole group, in an encouraging environment, with one-to-one advice. There is no formal work outside the class but, of course, the more you can look at sculpture at galleries, or on the web, the more ideas you will have of what you would like to make. Of course the essence of sculpture is its 3D nature, so exploring all around a work is the best way to get to grips with it. You will, however, be expected to come with some ideas of what you would like to make. The block that you will be working with for the two days will be 20 x 30 x 16.5cm.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

There are no other costs.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

The department offers a variety of specialist sculpture classes, you will be able to get advice on these from your tutor.
