The workshop is both an introduction to 3D design concepts and how to realise those designs by learning several practical fabrication techniques in wood and metal.
You will look in detail at examples of some of the most influential artists and designers such Breuer, Rietveld, Prouve and Rams, investigating several iconic modern objects in terms of their concepts and construction. You will explore some of the techniques used to make these objects and how they can be applied to build and improve your own designs.
- Understand a variety of makers/designers key processes and their application across a range of objects
- Be able to mark, cut and complete a wooden joint suitable for a piece of furniture
- Be able to design and fabricate metal constructions in folded sheet and tube
- Explored a variety of construction methods in both wood and metal and examined their use in your own practice
- Learned to work correctly within health and safety procedures.
Suitable for beginners, both art and design students wishing to expand or gain creative construction skills.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.
Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.
You will be taught by demonstration, hands on projects with examples, in groups and plenty of one to one tutor time, students are encouraged to bring their own art and design ideas along.
Basic materials and tools are provided.
Please bring a sketchbook and pencil.
You will be advised if your personal project requires specialist materials not included in the course fee.
No.
You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
