Course outline

What is the course about?

A 'taster' course for anyone interested in acting.

What topics will we cover?

Introduction of technical skills - breathing, movement, voice.
Introduction to the physical aspects of acting.
Improvisation. Group work, individual work and work in pairs. Beginning to explore the actors imagination. Observation skills. Use of games to free the imagination. Introduction of text - how to play imaginatively with text. Introduction to character devising.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- show that you have opened up considerably, working closely and generously with your fellow students.
- know whether you want to go on and explore acting skills in depth.
- understand that acting combines a number of skills and innate abilities which everyone can share and improve on.
- begin to identify your own unique qualities and how to exploit and expand them.
- have fun when acting.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Beginners.
In order to get the most from the course you will be able to:
• Listen and respond to instructions and feedback.
• Take part in class discussions.
• Read a script and/or related text.
• Work within groups and pairs safely.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

In a fun, friendly and supportive environment, using simple and specific tasks and instructions. Games, exercises and some presentations and observations within the class. Working individually, in pairs and small groups.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Nothing is required except attendance, but there may be a group visit to see a theatre performance of the group's choice.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Observation of self and others is taught as an essential skill in this area. You will quickly become adept at recognising progress in yourself and others.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Students are advised to go on to improvisation classes.
