Players from advanced classes, chamber music groups and quartets can join this ensemble. Some of the music we rehearse will be performed on the last evening of the course.

You will learn how to play in a string orchestra with a conductor.
- We prepare a programme of music for informal performance each half term.
- Techniques of sound production to suit different musical styles.
- Intonation
- Listening for ensemble playing.
- Listen well to produce good intonation.
- Listen well for rhythmic ensemble playing.
- Use the bow effectively for different styles and dynamics.
- The class is useful for players of about grade 4 to 6 standard.
- You should be reasonably fluent playing and reading music in 1st and 3rd positions.
- We work as an ensemble, directed and conducted by the tutor.
- You will benefit most if you can practise and play at home for at least 20 minutes, 2 or 3 times a week.
- You will need your own violin, viola ,’cello or double-bass.
- The tutor provides copyright-free music.
- If the class requests particular copyright music, there may be a small hire or purchase charge by agreement of the
class.
Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions. You will be required to bring a piece and your own instrument to an advice session.
You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Continuous informal verbal feedback by the tutor.
