Course outline

What is the course about?

The objective for this short course is to be able to play steady jazz grooves, and understand how to approach playing jazz drum fills in the context of playing with other musicians.

What topics will we cover?

- Playing steady time
- 4-way coordination
- Jazz drumming history including the work of Art Blakey, Gene Krupa and John Christiansen
- Understanding and playing musical form
- Reading notation for drum kit.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Appreciate and assess the work of key jazz drummers
- Demonstrate improved 4-way coordination
- Play a steady jazz ride beat
- Understand how to approach playing jazz form with a band
- Understand the basics of drum notation.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You need competence at the drum kit, be versed in rock/pop/funk and other styles. You should show an interest in learning about jazz music and protocol.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course is practical : playing kit in the classroom. You will be taught by tutor demonstration, by listening, analysing and reflecting, and by individual practice. There will be e-learning support for the course. Independent study will be assigned at each class.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Please bring your own sticks, a notepad, and a folder for tutor hand-outs.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
