Course outline

What is the course about?

The course is a practical and contextual introduction into Sports and Action photography that is designed for students to develop and improve their skills in this specialism.

What topics will we cover?

- Brief history and development of sports and action photography
- What constitutes a good sports or action photograph?
- Choosing equipment.
- What events are available to me?
- How do I position myself?
- How do I get my work published?
- Can I earn money with this?
- Questions and answers and discussion.
- Where to go from here – individual action plan.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Approach technical problems with more confidence
- Explain the development of sports and action photography up to this date
- Understand how concepts and techniques relate to your own practice
- Take better sports photographs technically and conceptually
- Take better action photographs technically and conceptually.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is for beginners of the specialism of Sports and Action Photography. You will be expected to have an understanding of the basic functions of your digital camera.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

During this course you will participate in a lecture/presentation, seminar, discussion and group work. There will not be any work outside class but students will leave with an action plan they can follow up.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

There are no other costs. You are expected to bring your own digital camera and are welcome to bring any other photographic equipment that you intend to use for sports photography (including telephoto lenses).

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. There will be time for questions relating to individual projects and interests.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre).
