Deaf awareness week 2010

Deaf awareness week at City Lit 2010 28th June - 4th July 2010 is Deaf Awareness Week when City Lit will be celebrating the success of our D/deaf learners. The theme this year for Deaf Awareness Week is 'Look at me' which aims to improve understanding of the different types of deafness by highlighting the many different methods of communication used by deaf, deafened, deafblind and hard of hearing people, such as sign language and lipreading.

City Lit is celebrating the success of D/deaf learner Alesia Parshutsina, winner of the 'Outstanding Learner of the Year East of England' award at this year's Adult Learners' Week. Alesia's ambition to qualify as a teacher for deaf children is remarkable, not only because she is profoundly deaf, but until three years ago she also knew barely any English.

“There are few opportunities for deaf people in her native Belarus,” said Alesia, age 21, so on leaving school, she came to the UK and signed up at the City Lit on its ‘New Start in the UK’ course. “From the word go, Alesia had a real thirst for knowledge,” says Sian Reeves, her nominator and senior co-ordinator, Skills for Life, at the City Lit. “I have never seen such progress made by a foreign deaf person new to the UK.”

City Lit run a range of courses for D/deaf people and for those interested in working with D/deaf adults. From English to computing and from British Sign Language to driving test theory, City Lit offer part-time courses for all levels.

City Lit also offer a unique BA in Deaf Studies degree accredited by London Metropolitan University. This is the only degree in the UK to combine Deaf Studies with theoretical knowledge and professional skills necessary to become a high-quality BSL/English interpreter or communication support worker within education. You will study at City Lit, in London's vibrant Covent Garden, and will be taught by a highly experienced and qualified team of Deaf and hearing tutors, some of whom have international recognition.
