What If?

What If? is an exhibition of art and design by emerging talent on the City Lit Foundation Diploma. The show features projects by 36 artists, designers and makers and presents the culmination of their study on this rich and rewarding course. Each work has been developed from an intense period of creative research, exploration, experimentation and production, and reflects the individual concerns and concepts of the exhibitors.

Across the variety of projects on show, What If? as a whole can be seen to respond to the precariousness and uncertainty of contemporary life. From mental health, international conflict and identity politics, to explorations of sex, love, anxiety and horror, the works on show provide a reflection and challenge to the many ‘what ifs’ that affect us today – as individuals and as communities – whilst covering the whole spectrum of human experience and emotion.

From painting, drawing and printmaking, to animation, installation and performance, and from ceramics, sculpture, and creative textiles to graphic design, illustration and typography, the exhibition covers the broad spectrum of the contemporary creative industries, whilst reflecting the aims and philosophies of the course. What If? is, on the whole, a celebration of creativity in a time of uncertainty, where creative practice can be a means of exploring and understanding our selves and our world and where art and design works have the power challenge and ask questions, to encourage contemplation and reflection, and to inspire and offer hope and understanding.
