What is the course about?

The aim is to generate a series of rapid drawings, and to free up your drawing style and use of materials, keeping productivity fluid and open. The drawing day will include shifts in pace and emphasis. You will be carefully guided through each transition, and given clear parameters. Some exercises will be closely directed, others will encourage you to apply your own reasoning and ideas. We will use traditional and contemporary approaches to drawing, so come prepared to observe, deconstruct, invent, enlarge, reduce, copy and collaborate – but most of all be prepared to draw intensively and responsively!

What will we cover?

• Exploring ways of seeing to question - what is drawing?
• Drawing from a variety of sources including observation and the imagination.
• Experimental use of a variety of traditional and unconventional drawing materials.
• A range of creative approaches to mark-making.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

• Use a range of drawing exercises to open up new imagery and ideas.
• Identify at least two new drawing techniques that you can apply in future.
• Manage the challenges of working quickly and responsively to a timed brief.
• Identify areas of potential in your exploratory or incomplete drawings.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This an intermediate one-day course for students with some experience of drawing. You should be open to using a variety of drawing materials, such as ink, charcoal, graphite and chalks.

You should be able to follow verbal and written instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information. You may be encouraged to take short written notes for your own use and take part in group discussions.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Tutor briefings and demonstration, set practical tasks, individual and collaborative work, peer reviews and whole-group discussion.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

All basic drawing materials and resources are provided as part of this course.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Depending on your starting point, you may like to take:
Extended Drawing for Artists and Makers (advanced), Drawing 2 or 3, Draw, Paint, Print, Introduction to Printmaking, a life-drawing, portrait or one of the Drawing at the Museum courses.
