What is the course about?
The aim is to generate a rapid portfolio of research drawings, and delve into new visual territories by keeping productivity fluid and open. The drawing-day will be structured into four sections, with significant shifts in pace and emphasis. You will be carefully guided through each transition, and given clear parameters. Some exercises will be closely directed, others will encourage you to apply your own reasoning and ideas. We will juxtapose traditional and contemporary approaches to drawing in tone and colour, come prepared to observe, deconstruct, invent, enlarge, reduce, copy and collaborate – but most of all be prepared to draw intensively!
What will we cover?
Drawing from memory, photos, mirror images, object forms, sound and moving image
The elements of form in drawing
Composition - Gestalt concepts and random techniques
Graphic techniques – e.g repetition, enlargement, reversal, masking
Content and meaning – contextual slides, discussion of work-in-progress.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
Use a range of drawing exercises to open up new imagery and ideas
Identify at least two new drawing techniques that you can apply in future
Manage the challenges of working to a timed brief
Identify areas of potential in your exploratory or incomplete drawings
Take home one hundred unique new drawings.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This course is suitable for students with some drawing experience. You should have completed a Drawing 1 course (30 hours) or equivalent study, and feel comfortable using charcoal, graphite, chalks and ink. Any additional media and techniques will be covered in class. Intermediate and advanced students also welcome.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Set projects, tutor briefings and demonstration, individual and collaborative work, peer and whole-group review, discussion and slides.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
Please bring 2 personal items:
a small object that interests you, in terms of form or provenance
a photograph or piece of text that you would like to work with
Standard drawing materials are provided: charcoal, ink, graphite, felt-tips, pastel and chalk.
Cartridge paper is provided; an A4 sketchbook is useful but not essential.

Eleanor develops precarious and fragile forms through drawing, painting and sculpture. The abstracted forms of the sculptures are heavily influenced by drawings of architecture, organic forms and landscape. The work questions the interconnection between personal identity and place. Eleanor spent her formative years in Japan before moving to London. She completed the Drawing Year at the Royal Drawing School in 2008 and the Turps Art School’s Studio Programme in 2018.
