This course provides an opportunity to explore the creative use of type and the image focusing on the basic design principles. You will start by generating a series of visuals using hands-on cut 'n' paste lay out techniques. Designs will then be further developed digitally using Adobe. You will be encouraged to discuss your work and ideas as a group.

What will we cover?

- Typography
- Layout and Composition
- Use of colour
- Information design
- Creative juxtaposition of image and text.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Demonstrate an awareness of the basic design principles in Graphic Design
- Demonstrate an awareness of composition and balance in layout design
- Critically evaluate personal design work in order to develop ideas further
- Use a range of software including Adobe.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is for complete beginners who are happy to work at a fast pace. It is also of benefit to those who have previous experience but wish to explore different ways of working. You will be using computers and so should be computer literate to follow direction and tasks. No need to have a design background, just unlock your creativity and explore the world of visual communication.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught through a series of practical exercises, presentations, one to one tutorials and group discussion. There will be additional tasks to do each week outside of the class hours, featuring reflection and writing, we estimate you will need perhaps 4-6 hours each week. Completion of assignments is important to get the full value of the course.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You are encouraged to bring an A4 or A5 sized sketchbook, a set of fine liner black pens and an A3 size folder for design work, an A3 layout pad or cartridge pad would also be useful. It would be useful to bring a memory stick or portable hard drive to save digital files (please note PC formatted hard drives can be read by Apple mac computers, but not written to).
