What is the course about?
This course provides an opportunity to explore the creative use of type and the image focusing on the basic design
principles.You will start by generating a series of visuals using hands-on cut 'n' paste lay out techniques. Artwork will
then be further developed digitally using Adobe Illustrator CC. You will be encouraged to discuss your work and
ideas as a group.

- Layout and Composition
- Use of colour
- Creative juxtaposition of image and text.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- Demonstrate an awareness of the basic design principles in Graphic Design
- Demonstrate an awareness of composition and balance in Layout design
- Critically evaluate personal design work in order to develop ideas further
- Use a range of basic tools in Adobe Illustrator CC.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This course is for complete beginners who are happy to work at a fast pace. It is also of benefit to those who have previous experience but wish to explore different ways of working. No need to have a design background, just unlock your creativity and explore the world of visual communication.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
You will be taught through a series of practical exercises, presentations, one to one tutorials and group discussion.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
You are encouraged to bring an A4 or A5 sized sketchbook, a set of fine liner black pens and an A4 size folder for
design work. It would be useful to bring a memory stick or portable hard drive to save digital files (please note PC
formatted hard drives can be read by Apple mac computers, but not written to).

Pam Williams is a designer and an educator with a wealth of industry experience. Working with leading architects, including Foster and Partners to create exhibition and signage design. Whilst at The Museum of London she produced graphic illustrations for inhouse Archaeology publications. She is responsible for the visual identity and promotional material for Peckham based Ganapati Restaurant. Pam has been lead as well as contributed to teaching Visual Communications at the University of the Arts on the Foundation course and for Central Saint Martin Summer School Programme. She is a graduate of Central Saint Martins and The Royal College of Art.
