What is the course about?

Do you have previous editing knowledge and feel you'd like to know more about what professionals do?
We will explore some of the methods used in the professional editing world, regarding workflow, colour management, sound improvements and output.

What will we cover?

Workflow – is there a best practice and what does it look like for you?
Essential keyboard shortcuts in an editing workflow
Track allocation for better editing?
Better colour management –video scopes
Better dialogue editing.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

1. Make an informed decision as to which type of clips (compression) to work with
2. Compare at least 2 different workflow set-ups
3. Use some essential keyboard shortcuts to place/edit/move clips
4. Consider using track allocation as a structuring tool
5. Use video scopes to identify B/W levels for colour management
6. Use a range of tricks to create better dialogue edits.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is an Advanced course - aimed at anyone who wishes to improve their editing skills and general editing knowledge. Prior experience with Premiere Pro CC (2017) is essential.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The day will be a mixture of demonstrations and hands-on exercises, allowing for some individual tutorial support. There may be forum sessions where we will look at each other’s work to discuss different aspects of editing and filmmaking in general and its common techniques. Asking questions and commenting is encouraged at all times. Worksheets are available.
You will be taught with workshops, short lectures, practical exercises, tutorials and hand outs. Please note the City Lit uses Apple Mac computers in Digital arts, Graphics & Illustration and Photography.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Our professional equipment and software are available for your use throughout the course in our fully equipped studios. For storing and transporting your work you are advised to bring your own external drive (fast enough for video editing and at least 500 GB). Please note that we use Macs in our digital film making studio and a PC formatted portable hard drive can be read by Apple mac computers, but not written to.
You might also want to consider purchasing other books related to the subject of film making and editing. We will also provide you with a range of hand-outs and you can make use of books in the library.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

We offer a range of courses in Editing with Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro and DaVinci Resolve as well as After Effects CC at different levels to suit your needs. You can also develop your film making skills in courses in DSLR, HD and smart phone film making in a range of styles including Narrative, experimental and Documentary film making.

Lily is a freelance film editor and consultant. Her main work over the past 10 years has been in helping people turn their dreams and visions into interesting films and successful artworks. She specialises in film editing, but also consults on all other aspects of film making and fine art. “To me, helping people find the stories the really want to tell and turn them into enjoyable and interesting films is uniquely rewarding and deeply fulfilling. I am particularly interested in enabling people’s own capacity, teaching them both practical skills (e.g. use of software and technical aspects of filmmaking) alongside conceptual underpinnings and critical engagement (version of visual literacy).” She has been teaching film and video related subjects ever since her own postgraduate student days. She is also an award-winning and internationally exhibited/collected artist.
