What is the course about?

This course is about war and the shaping of the American nation. The course will cover: the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, several wars with Native Americans, the Mexican-American War, and the U.S. Civil War. Through this, it will explore the military, political, cultural, and social experiences of the budding American nation.

This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.

What will we cover?

• We will cover military history topics such as the generals, the experience of soldiers, strategies, weapons, and the evolution of warfare during that era.
• We will also look at social and cultural topics such as the impact of the war on the homefront, public attitudes about the wars, and cultural representations of the wars.
• We will study the political context, including heated heated debates and intense partisanship.
• We will consider the diplomatic dimensions of war.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

• Explain the key wars of the early Republic.
• Describe American westward expansion, often referred to as Manifest Destiny.
• Discuss the impact of these wars on Native Americans.
• Critique the role war in general played in shaping the United States of America.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

No experience, particular skills, or previous knowledge is required. The tutor will provide the background and historical context necessary to understand the wars we discuss.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

• The course will be delivered via Zoom.
• Much of the course will consists of lectures, aided by audiovisual aids.
• We will discuss important individuals, movements, and controversies.
• Primary source documents (such as speeches, diaries, sermons, etc.) will be provided to you, but you will not be required to do any work outside of class.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Brian Kennedy

Brian was born and raised in the U.S.A. but moved to England seven years ago and recently became a British citizen. He has a master's and doctorate in U.S. history and has taught at Ohio State, Roehampton, Sheffield, and Hertfordshire universities. He is particularly interested in the roles of religion and ethnicity in American politics. As such, he has written about American Catholics during the Great Depression and Republican support for the Zionist movement. During his free time, he volunteers at Mind and a local history museum. He is an avid fan of all Boston sports teams and recently began reading science fiction novels.
