What is the course about?

The course examines the history and theory of the unconscious, from tribal cultures through to Freud's Vienna and up to the present day. You'll have an opportunity to become aware of your own unconscious through analysis of dreams, experimenting with self reflection, free association and mindfulness in a safe, confidential space.

What will we cover?

An introduction to the unconscious, with a brief history and profile of the people who tried to identify it. An opportunity to understand, through group work, our own unconscious and how it might determine who we are and how we lead our lives.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Describe how the unconscious works
- Summarise the history of the unconscious
- Articulate briefly your theoretical understanding of the unconscious
- Share experiences related to the unconscious in a group setting.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

No previous knowledge required. This workshop is aimed at people who have a curiosity about the unconscious, and themselves.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Tutor input and discussion; experiential work in pairs and small groups; using your own histories and case studies and role play exercises.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

A reading list and bibliography are provided, and a link will be emailed to you before the course so you can download handouts.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

You may wish to enrol for further personal and/or professional development courses, or for another counselling course here at City Lit:
